Deep Blue was always bound to be starting from behind with me, strictly based on the fact that it’s located in the domestic terminal at John F. Kennedy airport in New York City. Not only do I hate flying, but when you think of the bastions of good sushi, I would never have expected fresh fish and well-prepared rice to be available in an airport. The sushi itself was well prepared; the rice was room temperature and the Spicy Salmon and Eel Avocado rolls held together well. For those of you who have explored the “Essentials” page of this blog, you’ll know that I hate pre-mixed Spicy Salmon maki. Lower quality places will usually do that, and fortunately for me, Deep Blue was (at least when I went) a very pleasant surprise.
The atmosphere was dark and dimly lit with televisions at the sushi bar and a large seating area. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive, and the food came promptly and (as you can see) presented nicely.
Given it’s location, I certainly could not make a point to return randomly; that said, I would not hesitate to go to the airport a little earlier for a flight out of JFK. It’s just unfortunate they can’t bring me sushi while I’m waiting in the 53 minute long security line.
